Do you pay your grocer, or do you offer him only a sob story (or a stick-up)!

"It is often said that no one is independent because we all rely on others; e.g., on the grocer who supplies us with bread. This claim evades an obvious question: do you pay your grocer, or do you offer him only a sob story (or a stick-up)? The term "dependence" in its pejorative sense cannot be stretched to subsume both these policies. Those who find this distinction difficult to grasp and who prattle about the "interdependence" of our "complex" society may seek further clarification from any grocer." ~ Leonard Peikoff, 'Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand', Page- 258
